iMac: Apple's Best Computer

The iMac is a proud descendant of the first Mac. You don’t have to identify model as its all-in-one design is very popular and almost iconic. The device is nice for both demanding customers and newbies – it is perfect for those people who need a complete computer set (mouse, keyboard, and display) and want to maximize the efficiency of their workspace. The new Mac was presented in June 2017 at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference and the iMac Pro was officially presented in December. If you want to buy this gorgeous device, you need to know the difference between standard iMac and the one with Retina display.
Standard iMac
The cost of this model is equal $1,099 and it can boast of the following features:
- Memory, processor, storage, and graphics: It has 8GB of memory, 2.3GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor, and integrated Plus Graphics 640 graphics. RAM has a capacity of 1TB which you cannot upgrade yourself. So before buying, make sure you know how much you will need for the next couple of years. You can certainly add more RAM in the future, but it is possible to do that only in Apple stores.
- Display: The model has a 21.5-inch display with 1920×1080 pixels resolution.
- Input device: iMac comes with the keyboard and mouse provided by Apple.
- Connectivity: It has built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and also four USB 3.0 ports, a gigabit Ethernet port, two Thunderbolt 3 ports, and an SDXC card slot.
- Speed: It is actually the slowest iMac presented by Apple. However, it has enough power for different tasks on productivity, games, and photo or video editing. When you upgrade to a Fusion Drive or SSD, there will be a considerable improvement of speed.
For new owners of this device, an iMac is a great option compared to the Mac Mini as there is a significant increase in performance. However, if it is your top priority, consider to upgrade to a Fusion Drive. The 8GB of RAM should be enough, but buying more at the moment of purchase will save you money in the future.
iMac (Retina display)
The iMac with Retina display can boast of the following features:
- Memory, processor, storage, and graphics: iMac has four RAM slots which are accessible at the back. Apple provides standard 8GB, but you can add more in the future (only in Apple stores though).
- Display: The 21.5-inch model with Retina display has the screen resolution of 4096×2304. The 27-inch model with Retina display has the screen resolution of 5120×2880.
- Input devices: It comes with the keyboard and mouse provided by Apple.
- Connectivity: It has built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and also four USB 3.0 ports, a gigabit Ethernet port, two Thunderbolt 3 ports, and an SDXC card slot.
- Speed: The Retina iMacs are considered to be the fastest among computers presented by Apple.
The attractiveness of the Retina display is very strong and you will be happy with the way it looks. However, you might not be happy with the way its price looks. If you have doubts regarding the price, it will not take you long to get over it because once you tried the Retina iMac you cannot look at something else.
