As the latest version of the operating system for iPhones is now available – iOS 11, you have the chance to upgrade your device accordingly. The very process of upgrading will take a few minutes; you need the only WI-FI connection for better speed and also to back up your data. If you connect to a MAC, you can use iCloud or iTunes to save your valuable data.
Another peculiarity before upgrading is that all your 32-bit applications will not be transferred to a new OS version, as 64-bit ones. The way to see which of your apps are 32-bit, you can go to Settings > General > About > Applications.
There are two options for installing iOS 11. The first one deals with using the very iPhone directly and the second one – using Mac for synchronization. It is up to you to decide which way to choose.

Before proceeding to the iOS 11 installation, there are some aspects, to which you should pay attention. One of the most important is the compatibility of your device with the new system software. Almost all the latest models will be capable to work with the iOS 11, but it is always better to be on the safe side. Thus, concerning iPhones this list includes iPhone X, iPhone 8/Plus, iPhone 7/Plus, iPhone 6s/Plus, iPhone 6/Plus, iPhone SE and iPhone 5s. If you want to use the latest OS for your iPad, it will be easy, if you own iPad Pro (12.9-inch, 10.5-inch, and 9.7-inch), iPad Air, iPad Air 2, iPad (5th generation) or iPad mini 2/3/4.
Procedure of iOS 11 installation
To upgrade your device to the latest version, do the following:
- Tap Settings
- Tap General then Software Update
- The system will check for the available updates for a few seconds and will show the following message.
Note: The upgrade file is of about 2 GB that is why the Wi-Fi is required.
- Tap Download and install the updated file.
After a few minutes, the device will be restarted and the upgrade will be completed.
How to Upgrade to iOS 11 Using Mac Through iTunes
- Use the USB cable to connect your device to Mac.
- Launch iTunes
- The below dialog will be displayed
- Select Download and Update to start the upgrade installation. iTunes will download the files and install them on the device accordingly.
If you just need to download the upgraded file and install it later, click Download Only. To install it further, open iTunes and the following dialog will be displayed to you
Another option to install the upgrade later is as follows:
- Launch to iTunes
- Click the device icon next to the pop-up window
- Click the Update button in the upper section
Note: Click Cancel to drop the operation and to be able to install the upgrade later in iTunes
The process of installation will take several minutes and after that you can go to Settings to check the current iOS version. All the above described options for upgrading iOS have the same result, so it is up to you which one to choose. It depends only on your own preferences.
